A funeral program, ready to print

A celebration of life program, ready to print.

A celebration of life program is the printed handout for a memorial gathering that focuses on the person's life rather than a formal funeral. It usually includes their name, photo and dates, the order of events, any readings or music, a short life story and a thank-you. It can be more relaxed and colorful than a traditional funeral program.

How it differs from a funeral program

A celebration of life is often held days or weeks after a death, sometimes at a home, park, club or restaurant rather than a church or funeral home. The program can reflect that: a brighter design, more photos, favorite quotes, and an order of events that might include open-mic memories, a slideshow, music and food.

What to include

  • Cover: name, photo, dates, and a title such as "Celebrating the life of".
  • Order of events: welcome, stories or tributes, music, a slideshow, a toast, and how the gathering will close.
  • Life story: a short paragraph or two about who they were.
  • Favorites: a quote, recipe, favorite song or saying that was theirs.
  • Thank-you and details: a note from the family, and any donation or charity information.

Planning tips

Informal gatherings can run long, so list rough timings for the host. If guests are invited to share memories, mention it in the program so people can prepare. Print a few more copies than you expect to need; people often take one home.
